Outmoded Gadgets Hit Landfills at 'Frightening' Pace

"The problem today is that people upgrade their mobile phones every year and only a small percentage of these phones are disposed of safely," said Johan Thomsen, a manager at Green Mobile. The situation is "frightening," he said. Green Mobile asks people to hold on to their existing phones for as long as possible and passes on the savings of not having to subsidize a new handset to the user through lower call charges.

And with Coach Bielema going for the touchdown on 4th down instead of the fieldgoal that would have pulled his team within 1 point in the fourth quarter, he's facing some of that criticism now. Nice to see Wausau native Andy Crooks go out on a good note with a touchdown.

How was your Christmas? Mine was very nice. All the stuff I had planned happened on days we didn't get that nasty weather. The two highlights were the gift from my Godson. A Christmas tree ornament that said "I Love my Godfather." That one might have even made me a little misty. And the fact that on my Mom's side everyone in the family could make it to the Holiday get-together. That's the first time that's happened in years.

Finally, aren't gift cards great! I spent all of mine the Saturday after Christmas.

She set out as she had done every Sunday afternoon for years. She locked her door, turned to the weather, and held the hand rail as she stepped carefully down from the porch. Once on the ground she adjusted her hat on her gray head. As this was a winter day in the Christmas season, a cold day, she also adjusted her coat. Had it been raining, she would have pulled a large lawn and leaf bag, as if it were a poncho, over her head and upper body. Most times she shouldered her hand bag. This day she also shouldered a bulging plastic shopping bag. She walked along the dirt road that would lead her to the paved road that would lead her to the highway. Her only company was her shadow, small and indistinct at her feet. She walked without the deliberate care of someone unfamiliar with the terrain, but neither was her gait quick.

Governor orders review of 2-year-old's future

Thick coastal fog shut down one of two runways for arriving planes at LAX, causing minor delays for passengers the Associated Press is reporting this morning. If you are traveling through other airports this week, bookmark this handy site that tracks delays.

Air traffic controllers were only letting pilots land on the south runway Monday night, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said. Meanwhile, departing flights were also delayed by about 15 minutes because of poor visibility, he said.

"The controllers can't see a lot of the air field, so they have to slow down traffic as a precaution," Gregor said.

The fog was expected to lift by midmorning Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Earlier Monday, fog was blamed for delays at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, about 15 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.
