| Inventive and dynamic risk-takers who changed the face of Britain
Is it for nothing that we talk about one-upmanship and not one-up-womanship? Are women working at their jobs while men are working at their job titles? Are investment bankers and other professional advisers such as lawyers and accountants, no more than parasites that live off the hard work of corporations, and the hard-earned savings of the Great British public? No one can suggest this is a definitive list. Future lists, as well as day-to-day business coverage, will be influenced by readers’ comments. The Power 100 is the annually compiled list of men and women who hold sway over British business. The survey, now in its fifth year, has evolved. Originally, it put only directors of FTSE 100 companies under the microscope. Then it searched the boardrooms of the country’s 350 largest quoted companies.

Persona-lizing a site
A lost wallet lies on a Manhattan street, stuffed with cash. A white middle-income male New Yorker, between 30 and 44, picks it up. Will he look for the rightful owner, or pocket the cash? Who knows? But if George Costanza, the white middle-income male New Yorker between 30 and 44 from Seinfeld, picks it up, everyone knows exactly what hell do. Hell almost certainly keep the money, yapping endless self-justification to his friends at the coffee shop to conceal his feelings of guilt. George is one possible human face for his demographic group, but hardly the only one (thank goodness). Demographicsage, race, sex, income, locationdont go very far in explaining and predicting human behavior. Thats why marketers increasingly use personasnamed profiles that represent members of each key customer group, and describe their characters, personalities, tastes, and quirks.
Election year could translate into a quiet session in Olympia
Followers of the Legislature should expect a lot of talk but much less action on an array of meaty issues this year: * A new family leave benefit is supposed to take effect in 2009, providing $250 a week for five weeks for workers to care for a newborn or adopted child. But the Legislature hasn't yet determined how it will be paid for. A number of ideas, most notably a payroll tax on workers, have been floated but consensus has been elusive. Gregoire and at least some Democratic leaders agree whatever solution they settle on will have to go to voters. * When the Legislature convened for a one-day special session last month, lawmakers pledged to consider property tax reform during this session. But major changes don't appear in the offing. Chopp said last week lawmakers should seek study "not just slogans for the campaign trail later on." * There again will be proposals to change requirements for the Washington Assessment of Student Learning tests.
Wild Card -- Weekend
Only 3 more days until we get after it again in the new year. I hope you're enjoying yourselves as 2005 comes to an end. If you have some thoughts on the old year or resolutions for the new one, you can post it here. Or start your own thread. Or wait until Tuesday ... .
